MODULE(S²) Geometry: Connecting College Geometry with K-12 Teaching

Summary: Authors of the MODULE(S²) Project Geometry materials will share how the educative curriculum materials were conceived and provide a brief tour through the materials. The MODULE(S²) Project Geometry materials include three modules designed for use with prospective secondary mathematics teachers: Axiomatic Systems, Transformational Geometry, and Similarity and Measurement. Throughout the materials, connections are made to mathematics taught in K-12 settings. During the tour, the axiomatic systems used in the materials, selected proofs, connections to K-12 teaching, and other aspects of each module will be shared. Opportunities to further engage with MODULE(S²) will be provided.

Presenters:
Alyson E. Lischka, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, has a BS in Mathematics from Michigan State University, a MS in Secondary Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, and an EdS and EdD in Teacher Leadership for Learning with a Concentration in Adolescent Mathematics from Kennesaw State University. Her published research and scholarship is focused on supporting prospective and practicing mathematics teachers in developing effective mathematics teaching practices. Since 2016, she has served on the leadership team for the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership, a national partnership of over 100 institutions which is a coordinated research, development, and implementation effort to transform secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs. In her work with the MTE-Partnership, she leads the MODULE(S²) research action cluster in addressing the problem of improving mathematics content courses for prospective secondary mathematics teachers and is a Co-PI on the MODULE(S²) grant where she serves on the Research Team and the Geometry Writing Team.
Emina Alibegovic received her PhD in mathematics at the University of Utah. She continued her research in geometric group theory as the T.H. Hildebrandt Research Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan (2003-2007). During her work at Michigan, she was increasingly interested and involved with teacher education. Her first work involving mathematics teaching was with the group GRIP (Geometry Reasoning and Instructional Practices) through ThEMaT where she participated in the production of classroom stories as well as in geometry study groups with teachers. In 2007 she returned to the Mathematics Department at the University of Utah. There she initiated an MS program in mathematics teaching and taught courses in it as well as in the undergraduate teacher preparation program. In 2014 she started her work with MTE-P in 2014. She participated and led the Research Action Cluster, at the time called Building Communities and Courses, through the identification of the needed materials and experiences for preservice teachers. That initial work grew into MODULE(S²) in their current form. Emina was the lead author of the Geometry materials. She continues her work through the collaboration with the writing and research teams on editing and improving the materials. She currently teaches at an independent school in Salt Lake City.
