What geometry should secondary teachers learn, and what geometry should they teach?
Summary: I started teaching geometry for teachers course in 2006 and taught it on and off for the following 10 years. When I first started teaching the course, I had no formal training or knowledge of teaching, other than two workshops I went through as a graduate student and a postdoc. Over those ten years, I worked with many mathematics educators, and taught both mathematics and mathematics methods courses for preservice and inservice teachers. Through conversations with many people and work on two different projects I developed a course which consists of 3 modules. Those modules are meant to address the diverse needs of teachers who will be teaching geometry in secondary schools: mathematics content knowledge, knowledge of the curriculum, and knowledge of students. In this seminar I will describe this course. I will also share some thoughts about the course from the perspective of someone who has been teaching geometry to high school students for the past 4 years.

Presenter:
Emina Alibegovic received her PhD in mathematics at the University of Utah. She was a postdoc at the University of Michigan where she started learning about mathematics teaching. She returned to the University of Utah where she initiated an MS program in mathematics teaching and taught courses in it as well as in the undergraduate teacher preparation program. She was a Lesson Sketch Research and Development Fellow and a member of a multi-university team, MODULE(S2), working on development of materials to be used in mathematics teacher preparation in areas of algebra, geometry, statistics, and modeling. Four years ago she made another direction in her career path and has been teaching at an independent school in Salt Lake City since.
